Obama Urges Israel To Open Gaza Borders

January 23rd, 2009 . by HSLEADER

From Financial Times, by Daniel Dombey in Washington and Tobias Buck in Jerusalem

President Barack Obama urged Israel on Thursday to open its borders with Gaza.

The plea came in a speech that signalled the new US administration’s shift from Bush-era policy on the Middle East and the world as a whole. In a high-profile address on his second day in office, just hours after he signed an executive order to close the centre at Guantánamo Bay, Mr Obama proclaimed that the US would “actively and aggressively seek a lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinians” in the wake of this month’s Gaza war.

“The outline for a durable ceasefire is clear: Hamas must end its rocket fire: Israel will complete the withdrawal of its forces from Gaza: the US and our partners will support a credible anti-smuggling and interdiction regime, so that Hamas cannot re-arm,” the US president said.

“As part of a lasting ceasefire, Gaza’s border crossings should be open to allow the flow of aid and commerce, with an appropriate monitoring regime, with the international and Palestinian Authority participating.”

40 Al-Qaeda Reported Dead In Plauge Experiment

January 23rd, 2009 . by HSLEADER

From The Sun, by Alex West

ANTI-TERROR bosses last night hailed their latest ally in the war on terror — the BLACK DEATH.

At least 40 al-Qaeda fanatics died horribly after being struck down with the disease that devastated Europe in the Middle Ages.

The killer bug, also known as the plague, swept through insurgents training at a forest camp in Algeria, North Africa. It came to light when security forces found a body by a roadside.

The victim was a terrorist in AQLIM (al-Qaeda in the Land of the Islamic Maghreb), the largest and most powerful al-Qaeda group outside the Middle East.

It trains Muslim fighters to kill British and US troops.

Now al-Qaeda chiefs fear the plague has been passed to other terror cells — or Taliban fighters in Afghanistan.

One security source said: “This is the deadliest weapon yet in the war against terror. Most of the terrorists do not have the basic medical supplies needed to treat the disease.

“It spreads quickly and kills within hours. This will be really worrying al-Qaeda.”

Black Death comes in various forms.

The Moroccan Terror Connection

December 16th, 2008 . by HSLEADER

By Olivier Guitta

WASHINGTON — Until recently Morocco was more likely to be associated with tourism, rather than terrorism. That trend however is slowly changing.

That change began on May 16, 2003 when Morocco suffered its first experience at the hands of Islamist terrorism. That day, Casablanca was hit with four simultaneous terror attacks that left 45 people dead and hundreds injured. Al-Qaida style attacks were perpetrated by Moroccan citizens belonging to the GICM (Moroccan Islamic Combatant Group, known by its French acronym), a group affiliated with Osama bin Laden’s organization.

Needless to say that the kingdom was stunned that its sons had turned violently against it. Since then numerous - over 30 - local Islamist cells have been dismantled by Moroccan security forces that have tackled the problem head-on. Most of the cells have been linked to terrorist networks specializing in recruitment of volunteers for al-Qaida in Iraq, some of whom cooperate with individuals based in France and Belgium. Also the Mezwak mosque in Tetouan, where over a dozen young men were recruited to commit suicide attacks against coalition forces in Iraq, has become quite infamous.

The Saudi-owned daily Asharq al-Awsat called it ” the highway for suicide bombers to Iraq.” Unsurprisingly, among foreigners, Moroccans are second in the number of jihadists in Iraq right after the Saudi contingent.

But that is not all: Moroccans living abroad are more and more showing up in Islamist terror groups. In fact Moroccans have been involved in terror operations from Saudi Arabia to Afghanistan, from Iraq to Spain, from Holland to Belgium.

Russian Analyst Predicts Breakup of US, Russia to Reclaim Alaska

November 25th, 2008 . by HSLEADER

From DrudgeReport.com

A leading Russian political analyst has said the economic turmoil in the United States has confirmed his long-held view that the country is heading for collapse, and will divide into separate parts.

Professor Igor Panarin said in an interview with the respected daily IZVESTIA published on Monday: “The dollar is not secured by anything. The country’s foreign debt has grown like an avalanche, even though in the early 1980s there was no debt. By 1998, when I first made my prediction, it had exceeded $2 trillion. Now it is more than 11 trillion. This is a pyramid that can only collapse.”

The paper said Panarin’s dire predictions for the U.S. economy, initially made at an international conference in Australia 10 years ago at a time when the economy appeared strong, have been given more credence by this year’s events.

HSLEADER in Moscow

August 27th, 2008 . by HSLEADER

HSLEADER recently traveled to Russia and France. Here are some images of their police and security professionals as well as some local landmarks. The visit to Russia was especially eye opening and I came away with a much better understanding of the country, its politics and people.

Any homeland security professional could benefit from a trip to Russia to observe their security standards and practices. Frankly, most American professional would consider the standards somewhat lax. I found visitors could come and go from most major areas and landmarks with no direct scrutiny or security searches. However, there is certainly the sense that if you did cause trouble, you would be pounced on rather quickly by stern looking officers.

Throughout the trip I noticed numerous soldiers, police and security guards. However, most were either unarmed or armed with only a nightstick. There were very few guns to be seen in general.

The gravest security issue I observed was that access to many landmarks, including the St. Basil’s Cathedral (one of the world’s historical treasures), required no magnetometer or hand search. And, while I have no information on the religious, political or financial concerns impacting this decision, it certainly stuck out to me as a serious concern.

On the other hand, security procedures at the airports were solid and efficient. Travelers go through a variety of checks and screenings that provide confidence in their aviation security efforts.

I am delighted to put in a plug for Aeroflot, the Russian airline. Their flight from Moscow to Paris was conducted on a modern plane with a spotless comfortable cabin. The in-flight meal was delicious and provided about three times the food of a comparable American flight. It is sad to say that American airlines could learn a lesson in terms of service and comfort from their Russian counterpart.

Finally, a few notes on the threat of crime, pick-pockets and street thugs while traveling in Russia. In preparing for my trip, I was warned by numerous sources, including several Russians, about safety concerns related to traveling in Russia. Apparently, Moscow has the highest murder rate of any city in the world. I, consequently, took solid measures to protect myself and my valuable, including having a loca escort during most of my trip. However, throughout the trip, including trips on planes, trains, subways, trolleys and buses, while travelling day, night and overnight, I never encountered a single problem or concerning situation. Frankly, I felt as safe in Moscow than I would in any major city in the United States. As is usually the case, everyone creates their own personal security posture by managing how they conduct themselves in public, remaining situationally aware and choosing their environments carefully.

Naturally, I urge any American traveling overseas to take all necessary precautions to fit into their international environment, understand the current risks and to avoid dangerous areas or situations. I just wanted to be clear that at no time during my entire trip did I encounter any negative or threatening situation.

Again, I believe a trip to Russia that includes a trip to an area outside of metropolitan Moscow can be an informative and valuable research and training exercise for any American homeland security professional.

Here are some pictures from the trip…

Chinese Jihadists Threaten Olympics

August 7th, 2008 . by HSLEADER

From BreitBart.com

A Muslim separatist group in China has made a new video threat against the Beijing Olympics, warning Muslims to keep their children away from the games, a US group that monitors extremists said Thursday.

The nearly six-minute video shows flames consuming a Beijing Olympics logo and an explosion over a venue for the competition, and features a masked, turbaned speaker clutching what appears to be an assault rifle.

The IntelCenter released a copy of the recording, attributed to the Turkistan Islamic Party (TIP), an ethnic Uighur and Muslim organization seeking to create an independent state out of China’s heavily Muslim Xinjiang province.
